How it gets close to a DEXA
It Reads You The Way The Stand-Up Machines In Clinics Do
DEXA uses a low-dose X-ray, so you have to go to it. ScanFit uses steel plates for your feet and a steel handle for your hands, the same kind of contact the stand-up body scanners at clinics and gyms use.

Most smart scales put their sensors in a thin, see-through coating on top of the glass.
ScanFit uses solid brushed steel for all four foot plates and both ends of the handle. That's the kind of metal contact the stand-up body scanners in clinics use.
It reads you at more than one frequency, from 20 to 100 kHz. Muscle holds a lot of water, so the signal moves through it easily. Fat slows it down, and that difference is how the scanner tells the two apart.

Will it match my DEXA exactly?
No home scanner will match a DEXA to the decimal. In the hospital test, ScanFit's fat reading was close to DEXA for 50 of 50 people, and its muscle reading for 49 of 50. For tracking the weeks between scans, that's what you need.
Should I still get a DEXA?
If you want one exact picture a year, yes. ScanFit is for the weeks in between, when you're deciding what to eat and how to train.
I've heard water changes these readings. Can I trust it?
Water changes the reading on any scale like this one. So scan at the same time each morning, before you eat or drink, and watch the trend over a few weeks. The direction of the line is what tells you if it's fat or muscle that's leaving.
How is it different from the smart scale I already have?
Most cheap smart scales read you through your feet only and guess the rest, so the number swings from one morning to the next. ScanFit's handle puts your hands in the reading too, through solid steel plates, and it was tested next to a hospital DEXA scan on 50 people.
